Around the village
|
The many visitors who come to Maghar - be they school children, employee groups or day trippers from across the country - enjoy a wide range of attractions. Village tours are often led by academic experts who discuss the Druze culture or local army officers and servicemen who tell visitors of the community’s long bond with the defense forces. A rather different experience is to be held in the company of the Maghar Widows Group - women who cook Druze delicacies and unfold the rich tradition and past of the community while giving cooking lessons to visitors. These ladies also give lectures on the wealth of local plants and herbs, which forms the basis of their culinary arts. Visitors looking to combine hiking and heritage are advised to begin at the old quarter. Passing the mosque and church, follow the green trail that leads outside the village. During the olive festival additional trails of varying levels are opened as well. Since 2000 Maghar has been the home of a circus (with no animals taking part in the performances) in which Jews, Arabs and Druze perform together, as well as a theater group for deaf people that perform in the Sign Language, Arabic and Hebrew.
