Druze villages

Around the village

An excursion in Hurfeish can be enjoyed by foot or car. The tour will take you across sites and scenery that are unique to this Galilean village. The trail begins at Mount Sabalan, where the prophet Zebulon is buried. His is the second most important makam (holy burial site) of the Druze faith. The eastern part of the mausoleum offers splendid views of Mount Meron, seen at its 4,000-feet glory. After enjoying these majestic views and visiting the grave and the holy cave proceed by car to the main street. Park at the village square and take the northern alley; in a minute you will be strolling among the ancient stone houses and picturesque courtyards. Here you can appreciate the unique doorways and the uncommon sight of firewood stacks. Going up the alley you will see the local hilweh to your right, with the colors of the Druze flag painted on its door. Adjacent to the hilweh is the former home of the Aatef family, gifted to the Druze Waqf (holy sites authority). As you turn left you come across the ancient Carmelite church of Mary. The structure, marked by its blue door, does not bear a cross on its roof nor features a bell tower. The tour concludes at the heritage center, located at the home of the Jannem family.
