Druze villages

Yanuh

The Yanuh-Jat Local Authority was established in 1991. Yanuh, where 3,800 people reside, is the larger of the two villages. The local authority covers some 8,030 acres, and the annual growth rate is 2.8%. The two villages were once administered separately, and were successfully merged as part of the central Galilee plan. In 2003, following the implementation of the emergency economic plan, the merged local authority was further enlarged with the addition of Julis, Abu Sinan and Yirka to its jurisdiction. The merger was opposed by local villagers and was dissolved only a year later. According to tradition Druze settlement in Yanuh began in the 18th century. Ceramics found here indicated that the site has been intermittently inhabited since the Bronze Age, with the current village built on the remains of Byzantine, Early Islamic and Crusader settlements. The village is often associated with the biblical city of Janoah, named in 2 Kings, 15:29. During the Crusader Period the village was called Yanoah, possibly after the biblical Noah.
